Bulgaria\'s Sofia Lights Christmas Tree with Dubious Reference to Rio
2011-12-02
Bulgaria's capital Sofia has lit the lights of its Christmas tree with a special celebration for a fourth consecutive year.
The traditional Sofia Christmas tree, the 51-year-old pine near the Rila Hotel in the downtown, was opened by Mayor Yordanka Fandakova.
The Christmas Tree ceremony was preceded by an open concert of dance and song groups.
A special antique tram car brought participants in the happening from around Sofia.
We don't have an 85-meter Christmas tree as they do in Rio de Janeiro. We have a 15-meterChristmas tree and it is beautiful because it is alive, and it is ours, and the decoration is designed to keep the tree alive," Sofia Mayor Fandakova said in her address to those gathered to celebrate the start of the holiday season.
"Our city is beautiful and we don't need to compare it with the others. We just need to love it and keep it clean. I wouldn't celebrate Christmas in Rio de Janeiro, I prefer to be here inSofia. For me, Christmas is a tradition," she added, saying that she has already written a letter to Santa Clause together with her grandson.
"Sofia's decorations won't boil down to this tree only. It has already become a tradition for social responsible business to participate in the decoration of Sofia. There are alreadyChristmas lights on many Sofia boulevards. We keep decorating. There will be aChristmas mood in our city," Fandakova declared.
