The Bulgarian folklore ensemble in Canada's Ottawa "Rodina" ("Fatherland") has received two awards from the government in Sofia for promoting Bulgarian culture abroad.

The Rodina Ensemble was awarded at a highly emotional special ceremony in the Bulgarian Embassy in Ottawa by Bulgarian Culture Minister Vezhdi Rashidov, together with his deputy Todor Chobanov and Bulgarian Ambassador to Canada Evgeni Staychev. The event was attended by members of the Bulgarian communities in Ottawa and Monreal.

On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, the Rodina Ensemble received the highest award of the Bulgarian Culture Ministry "Golden Age" and "Ivan Vazov" award (named after the greatest Bulgarian writer) of the Agency for Bulgarians Abroad.

"The two awards are a recognition for the love of Ensemble "Rodina" for the Bulgarian cultural heritage and the promotion of Bulgarian national songs and dances abroad," the Culture Ministry in Sofia said in a statement.

On behalf of the Bulgarian government, Bulgarian Culture Minister Vezhdi Rashidov has welcomed the desire of the local Bulgarian communities to create a Bulgarian cultural center.

During his visit to Canada, Rashidov will receive back from Canada's Cultural Heritage Department a total of 21 000 ancient coins and antiques trafficked illegally from Bulgaria and seized by the Canadian authorities.

The ceremony of the transfer will take place Friday night in the Museum of Civilizations in Ottawa in the presence of the Bulgarian Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova.
